Sports Injury Therapy

Here at Alta Vista Chiropractic & Massage Clinic, we are sports enthusiasts. We not only sponsor several local athletic teams, but we also help athletes of all levels to prevent and heal sports-related injuries through athletic therapy.

Learn more about athletic therapy and why it may be right for you.

What Are Certified Athletic Therapists?

Certified Athletic Therapists (CATs) are best known for their quick thinking and on-field emergency care of professional and elite athletes as well as weekend warriors. They are the first to respond when someone gets hurt and are experts at musculoskeletal injury assessment and rehabilitation in a clinical setting.

CATs look at the body globally to assess where the problem may be arising to provide the patient with the optimal level of care. The mix of on-site care and hands on rehabilitation skills makes them greatly effective in treating the musculoskeletal injuries of clients both on the field or in the clinical practice.

Who Can It Help?

Athletic therapists (AT) treat a wide range of patients including children with concussions to seniors recovering from hip replacement surgery. They use a range of manual therapy, exercise prescription, taping and bracing, and the occasional modality. The main focus of an AT is to assist patients in returning to their daily activities, whether it be playing competitive sports or getting up from a chair.

Some may confuse athletic therapy and physiotherapy. Although similar, they are different. An athletic therapist’s scope of practice includes prevention, immediate care, and reconditioning of musculoskeletal injuries. This involves postural evaluation, assessment, and rehabilitation (manual therapy) as well as equipment selection (shoe wear, etc.), warm-up design, creating conditioning programs, and prophylactic taping and bracing.

The job of a physiotherapist is to assess the impact of injury, disease, or disorder on movement and function, and use modalities to treat their clients. They may also further their education by attaining certification in various rehabilitation techniques.

Your first athletic therapy appointment will begin with a brief overview of your health history, especially regarding your athletic activity. This one-on-one consultation will also consist of a discussion of your current concerns and health goals as well as a non-invasive functional and anatomical assessment to determine the best approach to your individual care. With this information, our athletic therapist will have a good understanding of your needs and desires and be able to confidently move forward with your first steps of care.

Ongoing athletic therapy visits will take anywhere between 30 and 45 minutes from start to finish. They will encompass a combination of rehabilitation techniques, such as manual therapies, soft tissue mobilization, therapeutic modalities, and reconditioning exercises.

Athletic therapy can be used alone or in combination with other forms of alternative health care. While it has produced noticeable benefits when used by itself, Alta Vista Chiropractic & Massage Clinic has seen many patients who greatly benefit from athletic therapy combined with other therapies, such as chiropractic care and massage therapy.

Because athletic therapy is not included with the chiropractic care programs we provide, it is billed separately. Be sure to speak with your insurance provider to learn more about your benefits prior to care. We are glad to help you better understand your coverage.

What can athletic therapy help me with?

Athletic therapy can help with a broad range of acute and chronic injuries. It can be used in both prevention and recovery and is known to help enhance overall performance. It is appropriate for all age groups and fitness levels. Our athletic therapist will provide all necessary tools and resources to give you the best chance of long-term prevention and healing.
How many forms of care can I expect to receive?

Our athletic therapist has a wide scope of practice. From manual soft tissue mobilization to exercise rehabilitation – we have your needs covered. We also guide our patients through stretching and take-home rehabilitation techniques.
Do I need to be seen weekly?

Because each patient is unique, it is difficult to know how much or how little you will need to be seen to achieve your desired outcome. After meeting with you and assessing your condition and goals, our athletic therapist will be able to give you a better estimation of your suggested frequency of care.
How much does athletic therapy cost?

All athletes are different. Some have substantial injuries that require months of rehabilitation while others have minor discomfort that requires only a couple sessions of preventative therapy. At the time of your first appointment, our athletic therapist is happy to address any questions or concerns you have regarding payment. Rest assured, our pricing is comparable.
