Massage Therapy Ottawa

closeup of shoulder masssageMassage therapy is a manual healing therapy that relies on specific stroking or kneading of the body to relieve stress, promote relaxation, improve blood flow, and stimulate better muscle function. While it can be used alone, it works exponentially well in conjunction with chiropractic care.

Here at Alta Vista Chiropractic & Massage Clinic, we recommend that most patients to take advantage of massage therapy to encourage a faster, more efficient recovery.

How Can Massage Therapy Help?

Muscle imbalances are associated with a variety of conditions. Whether due to postural stressors or overuse, these conditions can cause unwanted pain and stiffness. Massage is not only a great way to relax a stressed body, but it can also help injuries heal quicker.

Massage therapy Ottawa focuses on restoring muscles to supple, healthy states, which allows for improved mobility and better support for your spine and joints. You can also expect to feel a sense of renewed energy and relaxation in response to this method of care. Once your health goals are met, we recommend at least one massage per month to maintain benefits achieved during your original care plan.

Our practice is home to two registered massage therapists (RMTs), one male and one female. Each of our RMTs have undergone up to three years of training and passed a series of qualifying exams. They are professionally trained to assess and care for a wide range of conditions, from sports and work-related injuries to stress, headaches, and arthritis.

Our massage therapists can work by themselves or with other health care professionals. As your health is our main priority, they are glad to collaborate with referring practitioners to address your unique needs.

There are as many kinds of massage therapy as there are reasons for visiting a therapist. Learn more about the different types of massage therapy we provide.

Therapeutic Massage

Therapeutic massage is a physical therapy health care method used by massage therapist to address musculoskeletal pain and disability. It most commonly includes kneading and manipulation of muscles and joint mobilization. Therapeutic massage is commonly used to for pain relief and injury rehabilitation.
Relaxation Massage

Generally, massage is known to affect the circulation of blood and the flow of blood and lymph, reduce muscular tension or flaccidity, affect the nervous system through stimulation or sedation, and enhance tissue healing. These effects lead to a number of benefits that help the body relax, allowing you to feel less stressed and more at ease.
Sports Massage

Sports massage focuses on muscles specifically related to the athletic event at hand. It can be used before, during, and after performances. For athletes who train continuously, the goal is to enhance endurance, lessen the chance of injury, and shorten the time needed to recover from performance.
Pregnancy Massage

Prenatal massage is tailored to expectant mothers as their bodies experience pregnancy-related changes. It can be used during and after pregnancy to enhance the function of muscles and joints, improve circulation and general body tone, and relieve mental and physical fatigue.

While prenatal massage is known to greatly benefit pregnant women and their unborn babies, it is not a replacement for medical care. It is simply an aid in the health and recovery of the mother-to-be.

Trigger Point Therapy

Also known as myotherapy or neuromuscular therapy, trigger point therapy involves the application of concentrated pressure to “trigger point” (irritated areas in the muscles). Its main goal is to break cycles of spasm and pain. By placing pressure on the trigger point with the fingers, knuckles, and elbows, the muscles are able to relax and discomfort is relieved.
Hot Stone Therapy

Hot Stone Therapy is classified as one of the classic massage therapy techniques. It is a form of geo-thermotherapy that combines massage with the therapeutic use of hot or cold stones to care for symptoms such as neck pain, back pain, muscle tension, arthritis, and insomnia. This therapy is performed using volcanic rocks that are made up of various minerals that lend themselves to healing.[/toggleLymphatic Drainage

When the lymph system is blocked, toxins and plasma may accumulate causing interference with cell nourishment and depressing the immune system. Manual lymph drainage is an advanced form of massage that removes congestion and stagnation from the body. Gentle strokes are used to remove such blockage and promote proper lymph flow. This ultimately nourishes body tissue, helping it defend against illness.
Active Release Technique® (ART®)

Active Release Technique® (ART®) renews unhealthy soft tissue in the body. It includes identifying, isolating, and targeting the affected area to break up “stuck” tissue. By doing this, blood flow increases and injures heal at a faster pace.
Myofascial Release (M.F.R.)

Myofascial Release (M.F.R.) is a method of massage that involves hands-on pressure to restricted connective tissue. This pressure is applied to break up collections of soft tissue that should be free, allowing for restored range of motion.
